Agoraut

Monday, 10 December , 2007 – 18:02

Agoraut was officially founded in February 2007 thanks to the idea of seven young people (all in the 20/35 age bracket) who spontaneously, and sometimes almost by chance, were carrying out analyses and considerations about the political and social environment of their native territory.
The organization’s aim is to improve and promote local information and tourism. This is done through the organization and the promotion of live and online conferences, shows, events, seminars, meetings and discussions using whatever means multimedia technology has to offer.

Activities and projects

Web portal: Agoraut manages a web portal called “LaSiritide.it”. This portal is already one-year-old; its contents cover a wide range of topics, all concerned with issues of local interest. The idea was inspired by the name of ancient southern Basilicata. This territory, reaching the coasts of the Jonium sea, was at the times of the Great Greece called “Siritide” or “Sirtide”, from the name of the city of Siris.
The start up of the video news is a first step towards providing interactive television: basically the most important news as well as football and basketball matches reviews are offered to users in the format of proper tv-news reports.
Our portal has reached, in less than ten months, 125.000 connections.
Conventions: organising conventions is one of the main and most important activities in our organisation. This task is considered of paramount importance to thoroughly deploy the concept of interactivity: in addition to the virtual interaction we provide users with the possibility to have face-to-face interaction. This happened, for instance, in the occasion of the presentation of the Agoraut project: after the conference there was a constructive debate on ideas and opinions.
It is our intention to organise frequently this kind of events. The next one will be focussed on the illegal dumping of wastes in our area and we are currently working on the making of a documentary on the “odyssey” of local young people who have to emigrate to pursue further education.
Every meeting will see the participation of those representatives, from public or private institutions, involved in the debated issues.
Reports of these events will then be published onto the website, to allow those who can’t physically attend to keep up-to-date and to participate the virtual discussions on the forum.
The organisation does not currently collaborate with any other local or national organisation nor it is linked to any artistic/associative circuit any macro association.

Funding

Every activity carried out by the association is at present self-funded by founding members, with the only exception of a private donation, which allowed the purchase of only a part of the equipment needed.

Problems and hindrances for the organisation growth

A planned programme of events is essential to foster culture in Basilicata and to market and promote the region as a whole (even though acknowledging its different facets and idiosyncrasies) to a foreign public.
At the present time a plethora of events are being funded, some of them similar to one another or sometimes poorly integrated in the whole offer.
It is crucial to create a single programme or, at least, organise it geographically or by topics, with an aim to produce a more coherent and logical offer that would appear less confused and confusing to the foreign public.
On the way to the realisation of this project we’ve found the following problem: the lack of funds. The problem with the public sector is, according to our short experience, the way in which action is taken. Public institutions have a budget for funding cultural events and these money are indeed employed and spent; however what is missing is the management of human resources. The valorisation of a territory cannot take place if it doesn’t start from the stage of rising the awareness of local inhabitants. On the contrary, far too often incentives and projects follow a top-down route. The blame for this is also to put on the local players, not accustomed and unaware of the value of this kind of initiatives. The organisation of great events aims at drawing and focussing the attention on the place where these are held; however it is up to local players to offer in addition to the event, reasons for a prolonged interest, in line with local resources and, most importantly, local needs.
At the present moment we haven’ found any particular difficulties in dealing with privates, also because we’ve had only a single experience with them.

Orfeo Hotel

Saturday, 8 December , 2007 – 10:23

http://www.orfeohotel.com
Contact: Elisa Laraia

This started in 2004 in Bologna as a project Room – Elisa Laraia’s own ongoing work of art. She is actually carrying on her research on the exchange of identities in a spirit of sharing with other artists. It is the aim and evolution of the Orfeo Hotel to help the development of a place for Artists in Italy – not in the sense of traditional art exhibitions but for the realization of ongoing works of art so that the user can follow them from beginning to end. The constant purpose of this project is to create a work-place for both the artist and audience through mutual exchange. All the projects have been developed by means of a close collective survey of our contemporary world – starting with the gender’s identities and endemic creatures, such as plants, up to the contamination of the Internet 3 in “Second Life”. The approach of the Orfeo Hotel to research and experimentation encourages ever-new interactions with national and international artists.

Activities and projects

From 2004 to 2006 the Orfeo Hotel contemporary art project carried on an intense exhibition activity inside its project Room as well as in other places in the town of Bologna, and ever since 2006 it has started up an important internationally involved event, entitled “Art for Art’s Shake”, an observatory on feminine gender art, in cooperation with Comunicative and Agenzia 04. Next year this event will be consolidated in its third edition and is one of the most notable international contemporary and modern art fair’s off-events – “Bologna Arte Fiera”. Since 2007 the Orfeo Hotel has been turned into a virtual studio – www.orfeohotel.com – where Elisa Laraia and Alessandra Montanari plan works of art for Public and Private Institutions and pay particular attention to works of public art, specific-site installations and theatrical performances.
A further development of the project consists in utilizing the experience of these years in the Lucanian territory so as to give people a knowledge of contemporary art by realizing works of public art on specific sites all over the regional territory and putting together local young and well-known artists with their own ongoing exhibitions on the territory.

Basilicata Art Factory Project
http://artfactorybasilicata.blogspot.com/
artfactorybasilicata@gmail.com
This is a plan originated in 2006 and is being carried on by five Associations which are not only creative but also excellent organizers, such as Opera Prima (the Committee which promotes the Contemporary Art Museum in Basilicata), Orfeo Hotel contemporary art project (Contemporary art projects, photography, performances, public art and specific-site works of art), Cartoons (Audio-video expressions, comics and digital art), La Luna al Guinzaglio (Workshops, children’s theatre and exhibitions), Feedback-tragitti sonori (Contemporary and electronic music).
By means of a valid synergy between these five associations Art Factory is planning to create an identity which will be productive on the Lucanian territory and at the very same time active on an international level. This will be realized in a place where art can be offered, planned and produced for the public through creative workshops and the theatre, literature, design, music, cinema and contemporary art events.

The market and sources of income

Public Sponsors such as the Emilia Romagna Region Authority, the Bologna Provincial Council, the Basilicata Region Authority, the Potenza Provincial Council and Private Sponsors, apart from the fact that the Orfeo Hotel is self-sustaining.

Problems and drawbacks to development

Basilicata lacks an economic net of public and private investments connected with contemporary art and a suitable place for ongoing exhibitions and discussions, a publishing net capable of spreading the cultural activities’ content.

Opera Prima

Contact: Lorenza Colicigno

“Opera Prima”, the Committee which promotes the Contemporary Art Museum in Basilicata (non-profit-making) originated in 1998 in Potenza. This Committee aims at both establishing a Contemporary Art Museum in Basilicata, in Potenza, and starting up several activities meant to improve the public’s expertise, especially the young’s – respecting the activation of the arrears in order to achieve the aim of the Statute. The Committee has promoted and signed an agreement with the Basilicata Region Authority, the Potenza Provincial Council and Potenza Municipality for the achievement of this aim.

Activities and projects

This Committee has had a conference on the theme of the Contemporary Art Museum and training courses on contemporary art expressions aimed at High School students. Moreover, it has taken part in competitions on a national level with projects carried out in partnership with the Municipality of Potenza. With repeated encouragement the Committee believes it has helped to build a positive atmosphere of expectation, as well as the acceptance of the idea of a Contemporary Art Museum–workshop and also contribute to the evolution of a mature public. All of which nowadays makes the realization of a factory more and more concrete and relevant thanks to the “Agreement with the Young” as well. A factory, which is a workshop and productive area including all the contemporary art expressions and a necessary and useful evolution of the museum-workshop – idea which was at the very beginning of its layout. You can see the Committee’s work on the website www.museovirtuale.net.
Promoting the activities connected with contemporary art and encouraging and trusting the young have led the Committee chairwoman, Lorenza Colicigno, to think of promoting a group of associations capable of establishing an Art Factory in Basilicata, a place in which to plan and produce workshops and events regarding several contemporary art expressions.

The market and sources of income

The Basilicata Region Authority, the Potenza Provincial Council, The Potenza Municipality and Basilicata’s IRRE have earmarked funds in favour of the Committee.

Problems and drawbacks to development

After involving the above-mentioned Public Institutions in an active way, the Committee noticed a slowdown in the activities concerning the aim of the Statute which is mostly due to the complex importance of the establishment of the project for the Contemporary Art Museum and the difficulty in keeping the citizens’ and Institutions’ attention alive plus the Local Bodies’ own legitimate orientation towards the promotion of important contemporary art events.

The market and sources of income

The Basilicata Region Authority, A.A.T.O-1 (the Potenza Optimal Territorial Authority), Municipalities, Social Cooperatives, Schools, Provincial Councils, the Alto Basento Mountain Community and Training Centres.

Problems and drawbacks to development

We think that the lacks of premises which are necessary for the preliminary phases of a work (exhibitions, performance, etc…) is a strong limit to the associations’ planning skills. Furthermore, the imprudent public financing management and the lack of external entrepreneurial financing does not help the territory to growth.

Feedback

Contact: Luigi Catalani

“FEEdbACK ngroove” puts together – through the common language of music – different communicative and artistic experiences with the organization of events. Luigi Catalani and Pietro Sacco are the Feedback’s authors who together with Antonino De Natale coordinate this project which is open to all the different experiences connected with the field of production and musical communication.

Activities and projects

Inventing and realizing FEEdbACK unconventional sound routes which is an original radio format thought and presented by Pietro Sacco and Luigi Catalani. It is broadcasted on several local radio stations. Rare to the point of being unique in Basilicata, every week FEEdbACK presents a high-quality handpicked commented musical selection ranging from rock music to club-culture and promotes the most interesting up-and-coming Basilicata musical realities. In each episode FEEdbACK interviews different personalities, who are always artists of national and international calibre. Furthermore, once a month FEEdbACK hosts Blow Up’s director or a member of its editorial staff – this is the prestigious Italian music magazine.
Inventing and realizing tragittisonori.com, the only Lucanian portal giving space to music and its interactions with different arts is full of reviews, suggestions, reports, articles and photographs. It originated in May 2006, thanks to Maurizio Caggiano’s support. This website pays great attention to Basilicata’s music and artistic activities and 360.000 contacts have already been recorded.
This is the Club Cult Crew foundation, a collection of people from Potenza (Sacco & Vanzetti, Keng~, Fester, Lcy-o) who are active in various worlds as well as in artistic contexts. The Crew members have added a soundtrack to events connected with the cinema, the theatre, poetry, contemporary art and video-art, and interact regularly with figurative artists, photographers and video makers within The FEEdbACKERS which is an appointment – unique in its kind – organized in cooperation with Interzona Association.
Inventing and realizing – in cooperation with the Association “Amnesiac Arts” – “That’s all Indie!”, an international independent music festival which has already brought to Potenza artists of the caliber of Josephine Foster, Parenthetical Girls, A Hawk and a Hacksaw (USA), Blessed Child Opera (Italy) etc…for the very first time, exclusively in Basilicata.
Over the years FEEdbACK and tragittisonori.com have been establishing media-partnerships and cooperation with important music and art events on a regional and national level: “Italia Wave” (of which it is the official aerial), “Dissonanze”, the “Pollino Music Festival”, the “Potenza Film Festival”, the “Lucania Film Festival”, “Primo Maggio Tutto L’anno”, “Absolute Poetry”, “Piombino eXperimenta”, the “Festival Potenza Teatro”, etc…
Other experiences: the association arranges music selections and multimedia PFF Sounds within the 2005 Potenza Film Festival. It presents and/or selects music in the region’s most important artistic and environmental contexts (festivals, art galleries, urban crossing-places, squares, theatres, pubs) such as the 2006 Pollino Music Festival, the 2006 Lucania Film Festival, the 2005 Potenza Film Festival, the 2006 Video-art on the occasion of the Potenza chief town’s bicentenary, the 2005-2006 Arezzo Wave Basilicata (DJ-set and presentation) the 2006 ARCI music Festival.
Antonino De Natale
Antonino De Natale has great experience in the field of music as a live-sound engineer and studio programmer sound-engineer, technician in-charge, co-producer, expert in professional music software and also drummer. He has worked with several well-known artists as well as dozens of up-and-coming bands and has taken part in the organization of events and projects on an a national level…

The market and sources of income

The market is mostly local, yet there are excellent prospects for development outside this Region – which the several extra-Lucanian co-operations evidence. Music and art events are realized with the support of very few private sponsors, through self-financing and the participants’ contributions to the initiatives.

Problems and drawbacks to development

By enlarge, Institutions pay little attention to the present experimental innovative artistic forms, and are more attuned to national and international trends rather than the traditional local offer. It is extremely difficult to find suitable places for organizing projects and sharing experiences with people with similar interests and flairs with whom new cooperation forms may be started in depth.

Cartoons

Saturday, 8 December , 2007 – 10:11

http://www.cartoonsmedia.net

Contact: Silvio Giordano

Cartoons originated in Potenza in 1995 thanks to the joining-up of eight young artists. This association aims at communicating by means of images. In the beginning they worked with art and commercial comics by telling stories and realizing national and international publishing projects. From then on they have moved on to videos making works of fiction, documentaries, animation and multimedia performances. The members of Cartoons boast several national and international awards for editorial works (graphic novels) and also for Audio/Video products.
Besides the website www.cartoonsmedia.net which contains pages given to all the association’s members, they run a blog www.cartoonsmedia.net/dblog/ where they promote art events of other associations and inform people about opportunities and competitions for creative people – whether they are Lucanians or not.

Activities and projects

Of all the Cartoons’ projects approved of and financed by the European Community three projects are worth mentioning among the best projects realized in Europe respectively: 1998, “La Storia della Nascita dell’Europa a Fumetti”, 1999, “Coloured Boys” – a documentary film and cartoon dealing with racism – 2002, “Project Comic Strip”, an illustrated guide to the Youth Programme translated into nine languages.
For several years this association has been organizing “Short-Cut”, which is a short-film, video-clip and video-art festival which promotes the Lucanian film-makers’ works. During the last few years it has been working and taking an active part in the birth of “The School of Comics and Illustration in Basilicata”, in cooperation with “Comix School” in Naples and the Association “Amici di Ypsilon” in Avigliano.

The market and sources of income

The Cartoons Association is self-sustaining by means of publications, audio-video commissioned projects on a national-local level. It mostly cooperates with schools – from Primary school to University – and also training centres by arranging seminars, information and education courses for expression of images, creative workshops on comics, cinema, video and computer-graphics. Among the Institutions: the European Community/Integration and Culture Department.

Problems and drawbacks to development

The Cartoons Association relying both on each artist member’s expertise and the ten-year-old ability to work in groups feels the need for well-equipped premises (with computers, sets and multimedia positions) to satisfy the various artistic urges in which Basilicata is lacking such as realizing experimental multimedia art workshops. But, above all, digital animation, musical video-clips, illustrations, comics both for adults and children, video-sets, workshops for digital and craft colouring, the planning and designing of models for large installations, cinema and theatrical sets, cartoons and animation, cultural events, etc…

Multietnica

Friday, 7 December , 2007 – 15:54

http://www.multietnica.org
Person in charge: Nico Ferri

Multietnica Cultural Association works in Basilicata and organizes “Pollino Music Festival” in San Severino Lucano (Pz). There are two full-time workers, other four people are casual workers and there are about other 20 cooperating with them during summer.

Activities and Projects

The association mostly works for:
• the organization of “Pollino Music Festival” (born as “EtnoPollino” in 1996, it started enclosing different kind of music in 2001) and other events, such as “Terme Live” in Latronico and the brand new “Metaponto Beach Festival”. The “Pollino Music Festival” can count on an usual audience coming from all parts of Italy (6.000/10.000 people in three days) and on the most important artists of the national musical scene. A lot of local bands have used, and still use, this event to get in touch with the national record market.
• the scouting activity of young local bands (developed through to the annual selection for Arezzo Wave – now called Italia Wave- rock contest);
• local bands management (for example “Krikka Reggae” from Bernalda, that are imposing themselves among the most interesting bands of national reggae scene, also using their dialect for the lyrics);
• the production activity of various compilations and video clips of emerging local bands (Basilicata Music Net), like the very recent CD by Krikka Reggae (“Nà Soluzion”, produced in collaboration with Etnagigante/V2 and distributed on the national scale by Edel) that boasts of the artistic supervision and participation of Roy Paci;
• the vocational training activity, realized in an independent way through the use of short-list funds, such as the organization of training courses for emerging bands, most of which have been involved in Italia Wave contest. Multietnica has also organized - in cooperation with Gal Alba and Legambiente and thanks to the help of Vocational Training bodies and the support of “Culture in Loco” funds - a training course for 16 young people about the organization of cultural events.
Market and sources of income
San Severino Municipality invests in “Pollino Music Festival”, while Basilicata Region and other local bodies play only a marginal role. The scouting activity of young local bands is not always financed, although it takes place since more than 10 years with remarkable visibility and tangible results within the Region. Multietnica succeed in obtaining funds for their projects, participating in a culture short-list and in “Culture in Loco” call for proposal.
The management and recording production activities are both self-financed, with many difficulties, through the concerts and the marketing of the outputs.

Problems and hindrances to the growth

One of the most urgent problems is to communicate and to find interlocutors among regional bodies, able to understand both the importance of a far-seeing scheduling of events and the cultural, social and formative value of the scouting activity of young local bands, annually realized since 1997. There’s also a lack of participation by the side of Basilicata Region during the planning and the promotion phases of “Pollino Music Festival”, even if it has reached its 13th edition. This participation is fundamental because, even if San Severino Municipality invests a lot in the festival, it’s almost impossible to fill up the deficiency of the services necessary to the event like, for example, the arrangement of equipped and properly policed camping areas or shuttles to reach the concerts.
Multietnica proposed some of the Municipalities of the same area a cooperation to organize an itinerant “Pollino Music Festival”, but they decided to organize music events on their own.
Multietnica activities seem to have rooted in local policies for the organization of events able to appeal a wide audience; at the same time the proliferation of music contests for emerging bands (Pollino Fusion, Camastra Sound, Tolve Live,…..) and the increasing number of the bands themselves show that Multietnica activities have encouraged creativity, cultural production and aggregation, together with the organization of other matching circumstances for young musicians of Basilicata.

Matera digitale

Potenza teatrale
